"Zero" has long been treated philosophically as nothingness. In ancient Greece it was deemed non-existent; it was the Indian mathematician Brahmagupta who first defined it as an independent number. The discovery of zero was a turning point that changed how the world itself is seen.
Zero and One attends to the moment one is born from zero — not a mythic creation from nothing, but the moment a new idea arises when the way we see what is already there changes.
The material is brass, a metal used since antiquity that has never lost its luster. Worked into a line, the brass forms a "zero" — a figure connecting past and present. Tilted slightly in angle or orientation, the zero approaches a "one." What matters is not that zero vanishes into one, but that one arises when a new point of view is given to the existing state of zero.
Zero is also what is "already here" and rarely noticed — like air, like the everyday. Only when a shift of perspective occurs does an idea take shape. This work stands for the courage of a first step from zero, a small step toward changing oneself. Not creating something from nothing, but reseeing what already exists opens a new world — and that turning point is where creativity begins.
